3a | ADU HOUSING
INSTRUCTOR: PAULETTE SINGLEY
ARCH 301
Inspiration for this project stemmed from the termite and its specific yet chaotic nesting tendencies a colony creates throughout a piece of humble driftwood.
My building aims to embody this natural phenomena and simulate its function.
The goals of this assignment were to work with permanent and mobile living accessories, work at the small scale of the human body, consider daylighting and existing structural systems, complete as-built drawings for Type 5 construction, understand small-scale site design opportunities, develop an understanding of quotidian inhabitation that will inform the design of multiple units, develop wallpaper as a formal ordering system, and respond to Altadena (Los Angeles County) building codes.
Nest Concept Model and Wallpaper
ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit)
“Pied-à-terre for an Older Couple”
Wallpaper was designed to tell a story about domestic space and patterns, while considering scale and other factors to designing process
Merge
We were tasked with the process of merging the nest concept model and the ADU design to be arranged on a proposed site in Venice, California.
Among these drawings, the plans I made here were one of the most exciting aspects of this project, personally I had a good time with the nest-like challenge and the language it produced.
The proposed location for my studio section’s site is located amongst the canals and is adjacent to
N. Venice Avenue, this strip of land is where we placed 8 housing units total all ranging from 8 to 12 units.
